A vaginal pessary is a removable device that is inserted into the vagina and is designed to support areas of pelvic organ prolapse. Pessaries are often used as a nonsurgical approach to the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and there are a variety of pessaries available. Dr. Murphy and his staff provide full assessments and fittings to woman requiring vaginal pessaries to alleviate prolapse and incontinence issues.
Pessaries can be used in pregnancy, especially during the early months if significant prolapse occurs before the natural enlargement of the uterus resolves the problem (often only temporary). Another place for pessaries is in the preoperative period, to help heal ulcers on the tip of the prolapsed cervix and to decrease the swelling of the prolapsed organs. Some women are so uncomfortable during this waiting period that a pessary could bring welcome temporary relief.
The choice of the correct type and size of pessary is more art than science, and experience is achieved only by trial and error. It often comes down to fitting various types and/or sizes to see which works best. Dr. Murphy and his staff are equipped with the experience, training and expertise to assist you with all your vaginal pessary needs.
